Whether in medical technology, electronics, or automotive manufacturing, the demands on functional coatings are constantly increasing. In addition to an efficient performance, they must also be highly reliable and wear- and corrosion-resistant under extreme conditions. High-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) is a key technology for solving these challenges. Through the creation of highly ionized plasmas, coatings can be produced which are particularly dense, adherent, and precisely controllable. The 15th HIPIMS conference, which took place in Braunschweig at the end of June, focused on how this technology is developing and where it can be applied in the future.
Around 90 participants from 17 countries accepted the invitation from the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST and the co-organizers — the Competence Network Industrial Plasma Surface Technology e.V. INPLAS, Sheffield Hallam University, and the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Surface and Production Engineering for Optical and Electrical Systems at Feng Chia University (FIP-SPE@FCU) — to take part in the world’s only conference dedicated exclusively to high-power impulse sputtering in research and application. This once again conclusively demonstrated the international significance and networking potential of this key technology.
This was the first time that the conference had been held at the Fraunhofer IST. A comprehensive program was offered, comprised of technical presentations on current developments and applications of HIPIMS technology, fundamental physical processes, plasma diagnostics and simulations, and aspects of digital transformation in vacuum coating technology. One outstanding highlight was the Taiwan session, which was dedicated to the newly established partnership with FIP-SPE@FCU.
Two days before the start of the actual conference, the event commenced with accompanying tutorials, which were offered in collaboration with the Society of Vacuum Coaters (SVC). A further highlight was the panel discussion on “State of the Art and Opportunities in Commercial HIPIMS Applications”, in which leading experts discussed the current status and future potential of HIPIMS technology.
“The variety of topics together with the high international participation of over 60% of the attendees show how dynamic and seminal the HIPIMS technology is,” emphasized Dr. Ralf Bandorf, Conference Chairman and Group Manager of Optical and Electrical Systems at the Fraunhofer IST. “This conference offers a unique opportunity to connect science and industry and to work as a team on solutions for the challenges of tomorrow.”
