Passau economist takes part in Lindau Nobel Meeting in Economic Sciences

Dr Benedikt Janzen, postdoctoral researcher at the Chair of Public Economics at the University of Passau, is one of 300 young economists worldwide who are going to meet the winners of the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in Lindau.

Participating in the Lindau Nobel Meeting on Economic Sciences is a special honour. It offers an opportunity to exchange ideas with recipients of the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. This year, an economist from the University of Passau is once again among the select group: Dr Benedikt Janzen, postdoctoral researcher at Professor Stefan Bauernschuster’s Chair of Public Economics, is one of 300 young economists from around the world who will travel to Lindau. The 8th Lindau Nobel Meeting on Economic Sciences will take place from 26 to 30 August on Lake Constance.

‘It's a huge opportunity for me to be able to present my research on this stage,’ says Janzen. He is particularly hoping to meet US economists Joshua Angrist, David Card and Guido Imbens – the three leading minds in empirical economic research and winners of the 2021 Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize.

Janzen's research focuses on applied microeconomics with an emphasis on environmental, health and labour economics. In one study, for example, he analysed whether peer influence on energy behaviour could accelerate the energy transition. In another project, together with his colleague Katharina Drescher, he demonstrated that heat waves increase the number of accidents at work – even among office workers.

Participation is only possible once in a lifetime

‘A central aspect of my research is the use of methods that allow for the identification of causal relationships from observational data. This is often challenging in economics because we cannot conduct experiments for many questions,’ he explains. Angrist, Card and Imbens have made a key contribution to the development and widespread adoption of these empirical methods.

Stefan Bauernschuster, Professor of Public Economics, speaks of a credibility revolution in microeconomics: "This development has revolutionised empirical economic research. Today, everyone in our field has to engage with these methods.‘ He emphasises the importance of participating in the Lindau Conference and the great honour that only comes once in a lifetime: ’I am very pleased that Benedikt Janzen will be able to present his work at the Lindau Conference. This is an award that opens doors and can shape a scientific career."

The School of Business, Economics and Information Systems at the University of Passau is also proud of this success: ‘This proves once again that we enable excellent research at the faculty and that our young scientists are internationally competitive,’ says Dean Professor Suleika Bort.

    About Dr Benedikt Janzen

The 31-year-old has been working as a graduate teaching and research assistant at the Chair of Public Economics since October 2024. He previously completed his doctorate in economics at the University of Bern and studied in Würzburg (bachelor's) and Vienna (master's). He never planned to pursue a career in research: ‘I kind of fell into it – but it's a good fit, of course. I’m continually fascinated by using econometric methods to uncover causal relationships in socially relevant contexts.’
