The role of feedback in galaxy formation

Dr. Janine Fohlmeister Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam

From 14 to 18 July 2025, more than 150 selected scientists will meet at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) to discuss current challenges and developments in astrophysics at the 18th Potsdam Thinkshop. This year's edition of the international event series is dedicated to the topic of ‘The Role of Feedback in Galaxy Formation’ - the influence of feedback processes on the growth and development of galaxies.

Focusing on the main topic of the discussion are the various mechanisms that are triggered by stars, supernovae or supermassive black holes, which significantly shape the properties of galaxies. The lectures will shed light on these processes from a theoretical and an observational perspective—for example with the help of multi-scale simulations, modern radio telescopes or space observatories such as the James Webb Space Telescope.

“After the great success of our Thinkshop on ‘The role of feedback in galaxy formation’ in 2018, we are delighted to once again welcome over 150 scientists to the AIP. The international exchange and the diversity of perspectives are a great benefit to us. In a vibrant atmosphere, we would like to discuss how the various processes shape the formation and evolution of galaxies from cosmic dawn until today. We are looking forward to exciting lectures, intensive discussions and new impulses for research” says Prof. Christoph Pfrommer (AIP). The aim of the 18th AIP Thinkshop is to connect leading international experts with young researchers working in both galactic and extragalactic astronomy.

A key focus of the five-day event will be on phenomena such as cosmic rays, magnetic fields, and gas structures, and their role in shaping star formation across different cosmic epochs. The Thinkshop aims to bridge theoretical models with the latest observational data to advance our understanding of galactic evolution.

With the Thinkshop, the AIP offers the international astrophysics community a platform for interdisciplinary exchange and scientific networking—and creates space for new ideas and future collaborations. At a time of fast technological developments and growing data sets, a close dialog between theory and observation is particularly crucial to answer key questions in research. The current Thinkshop sheds light on current findings, identify gaps in knowledge and jointly initiate new lines of thought.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
