The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) is pleased to welcome new additions to its team of professors: Prof. Dr Benjamin Engler and Prof. Dr Katharina Löhr have joined the university to teach and conduct research – bringing with them different academic backgrounds but a shared goal: to help shape the transition towards a socio-ecological future for our society.
Prof. Dr Benjamin Engler – Shaping Change in Forestry Practices
Born in Dresden, Benjamin Engler studied Forest Sciences in Dresden and Sustainable Land Use Management in Freiburg, where he also completed his doctorate. Research stays took him to countries including China, Canada and the USA.
At HNEE, he has taken up the professorship for Forest Work Science and Process Engineering.
Benjamin Engler places people at the centre – both as decision-makers in forestry and as workers exposed to physical and mental strain. The diversity of his field opens up a wide range of topics, bridging traditional forestry disciplines with technical subjects, social sciences and medical research.
He will teach in the degree programmes Forestry (B.Sc.), International Forest Ecosystem Management (B.Sc.), and Forestry System Transformation (M.Sc.). In his teaching, he aims to bring in his international experience and raise students’ awareness of how deeply forestry decisions impact ecological, social and economic systems.
Prof. Dr Katharina Löhr – Socio-Ecological Perspectives on Land Use
A native of Berlin, Katharina Löhr has followed an interdisciplinary academic path. After studying Education, African Studies, and completing a Master’s in International Conflict Research and Development Policy, she earned her doctorate at Humboldt University Berlin and worked at the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF). Her expertise lies at the intersection of sustainable land use, governance and social cohesion.
She holds an endowed professorship in Socio-Ecological Forest Governance and plays a key role in repositioning forests as both a social and ecological resource. She has a strong interest in interdisciplinary teaching and research, particularly on topics such as reforestation, social peace, and knowledge exchange between science, policy and society.
Katharina Löhr will primarily teach in the degree programme Socio-Ecological Forest Management. For her, it is crucial to consider land use not only from an ecological perspective, but also in terms of its social value and importance as a survival resource.
The HNEE warmly welcomes its new professors and looks forward to their expertise, curiosity and innovative spirit bringing fresh momentum to teaching, research and knowledge transfer. With their diverse backgrounds, they contribute to addressing current challenges from forestry, ecological and social science perspectives – and to developing sustainable solutions together with students and partners.
