A relationship between humans and AI chatbots – how is that possible? How can we better recognise misinformation and deep fakes? And how does the constant use of smartphones affect mental health? The international conference on media psychology 2025 in Duisburg, which will take place from 10 to 12 September, is dedicated to highly topical issues at the intersection of psychology and technology. And it is setting new records. With over 230 participants from 21 countries and 221 submissions, it is bigger and more international than ever before.
The 14th conference of the Media Psychology Section of the German Psychological Society brings together researchers from all over the world to discuss the psychological and social dimensions of digital technologies. The topics of the MediaPsych Conference 2025 provide the foundation for social debates and political decisions, for example on the promotion of media literacy or the regulation of technologies.
Prof. Dr. German Neubaum, media psychologist at the University of Duisburg-Essen, emphasises the importance of bringing together international researchers and experts: ‘Especially in media psychology, where digital change transcends all boundaries, the value of international conferences becomes clear: they create spaces for exchange and joint solutions – and foster a global understanding of how people interact with ever-evolving technologies.’
For the Faculty of Computer Science, founded at the UDE in October 2023, hosting the international MediaPsych conference is an important opportunity to sharpen its interdisciplinary profile and, together with the Department of Human-Centered Computing and Cognitive Science, raise international awareness of human-technology interaction as a key research topic. The joint organisation of the conference with the Centre for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) further strengthens collaboration in the Ruhr region as a centre of science and research.
Programme highlights
The agenda covering a diversity of workshops, presentations and poster sessions demonstrates the thematic breadth and interdisciplinary approach of the MediaPsych Conference 2025. Highlights include two international keynotes: Prof. Dr. Jessica Piotrowski (University of Amsterdam) will speak about the importance of promoting competence in the digital society, while Dr. Mitra Shamsi (Iran) will shed light on the connection between digital visibility, vulnerability and feminist activism in authoritarian contexts.
The pre-conference workshops will start on 10 September, including a special offer for doctoral students and a practical workshop on AI tools in research.
Registration for the conference is open until 9 September.
