Extracting new valuable materials from industrial waste – that's what the latest spin-off from Leibniz-HKI, the biotech startup Biophelion, is working on.
Prompted by the “Circular Biomanufacturing Challenge” organized by the Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovations SPRIND, Biophelion was founded as a spin-off of Leibniz-HKI and RWTH Aachen University.
The founding duo, Lars Regestein and Till Tiso, now managing directors, are getting started at the Beutenberg Campus – in the immediate vicinity of Leibniz-HKI, with which they will continue to cooperate closely in the future. The goal is to develop innovative bioprocesses to transform industrial waste into marketable, environmentally friendly products. As a technology transfer partner of Leibniz-HKI, Ascenion GmbH has accompanied the project from the outset and was involved in the spin-off process.
The Jena-based biotech startup Biophelion wants to help make the chemical industry more sustainable – with an unusual partner: a yeast-like black fungus. It transforms carbon-containing industrial waste from bioethanol, sugar, and paper production into valuable materials such as bio-based polyester, the food polymer pullulan, and a novel, biodegradable surfactant. This keeps carbon in the cycle instead of releasing it as CO₂.
