Fraunhofer ITEM receives AAALAC accreditation

Dr. Cathrin Nastevska Institutsstrategie und -kommunikation
Fraunhofer-Institut für Toxikologie und Experimentelle Medizin ITEM

The Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine ITEM has now been officially accredited by AAALAC International (Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International). This underlines the institute’s commitment to a responsible, ethical, and humane use of animals in research – going beyond legal requirements.

AAALAC International is a private, nonprofit organization that accredits research institutions worldwide which strive for excellence in animal care and use. Participation in this accreditation program is voluntary and in addition to the strict compliance with all applicable local and national laws. For Fraunhofer ITEM, the accreditation is an important part of its 3R strategy (Replace, Reduce, Refine). The goal is to minimize the use of animals in research whenever scientifically possible, while ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare. Animals are only used when no suitable alternative methods are available – and always under conditions that prioritize their well-being.

“AAALAC accreditation is for us a visible sign of our process of continuous improvement. We take our responsibility seriously and combine our expertise with the highest ethical standards,” says Prof. Norbert Krug, Director of Fraunhofer ITEM. “In this way, we help advance scientific progress and animal welfare hand in hand.” With this successful accreditation, Fraunhofer ITEM joins an international circle of leading research institutions that not only comply with legal minimum requirements, but also actively take responsibility for forward-looking and ethically sound research.
