On October 16, Dr. Katrin Kleemann from the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven (DSM) was named a Young Academy Fellow by the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg. The environmental historian successfully applied for the prestigious funding program and will now be part of the interdisciplinary network for three years. During this time, she will receive conceptual, professional, and financial support from the Academy.
Prof. Dr. Mojib Latif, President of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg, meteorologist, and oceanographer with a doctorate and habilitation, personally presented Dr. Kleemann with the certificate of appointment. “I know Prof. Latif from the media, of course, and I also deal with his discipline in my research on the history of the maritime observatory. I was very pleased that he would one day shake my hand personally and appoint me as a Young Academy Fellow,” said Kleemann.
Dr. Kleemann is now one of nine outstanding young scientists selected this year. Since 2020, the Academy has been bringing together young researchers from various disciplines every year through this program. The fellows are selected by the Academy's Committee for the Promotion of Young Talent in a multi-stage, rigorous process.
The fellows establish their own research groups, network with established scientists, and organize joint events. The focus is on interdisciplinary basic research and socially relevant questions about the future.
Dr. Kleemann conducts research at the intersection of environmental and scientific history. Her main topics range from the history of oceanography and meteorology to climate history and natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. She is particularly looking forward to interacting with other fellows: “I am already looking forward to working in one of the Academy's working groups, for example on methodological standards in science or the investigation of networks in various scientific and application areas, and to regular exchanges with the other Young Academy Fellows.”
Before this exchange begins, Dr. Kleemann will first be active at the DSM in Bremerhaven: From October 22 to 24, she is inviting the international scientific community to the conference “Planetary Waters – A Challenge Between Abstraction and Empathy.” To kick things off on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, Prof. Dr. Elda Miramontes from MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen will speak on “Plastic pollution from the coast to the deep sea.” The lecture, in English, will begin at 6 p.m. in the “Schiffswelten” (Ship Worlds) of the DSM. Admission is free – interested citizens and school classes are also welcome.
