Professor Tilman Brück, research group leader at the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) and Professor at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin has been appointed to the Steering Committee of the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE-FSN) of the United Nations Committee on World Food Security (CFS).
Joint press release by HPLE-FSN and IGZ
The HLPE-FSN is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to global food security and nutrition and is governed by a Steering Committee of 15 world-renowned scientists. His appointment is in recognition of his significant scientific contributions to global food security and nutrition.
“It is a great honor to join the HLPE-FSN Steering Committee,” said Professor Tilman Brück. “I look forward to contributing to make food systems more resilient in times of existential crises for low-income consumers and smallholders around the world, helping to achieve food security for all.”
Professor Tilman Brück is Research Group Leader at the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) in Großbeeren and Head of the Research Group “Economic Development and Food Security”. He is also Heisenberg-Professor of Economic Development and Food Security at the Thaer-Institute at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, founder and director of the International Security and Development Center (ISDC) in Berlin and leads the “Zero Hunger Lab” at IGZ and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Professor Brück analyses the behavior and the welfare of poor and vulnerable people in conflict-affected, fragile and humanitarian emergency settings. He also studies how policies and programs can improve lives and livelihoods in such settings - and how to collect data and conduct research in challenging circumstances. He has published widely in international peer-reviewed journals, has led multiple international research projects and networks, and regularly advises international organizations and governments on food security, resilience and humanitarian policy. He holds doctorate and a master’s degree in economics from the University of Oxford and studied economics at the University of Glasgow.
The membership to the Steering Committee is renewed every two years, through an open nomination process based on scientific excellence. The appointment reflects the exceptional experience and expertise, and it is a remarkable achievement that shows the high regard in which Professor Brück is held within the global food security and nutrition community.
