Max Planck Artificial Intelligence Network (MP-AIX) – An Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program
The Max Planck Artificial Intelligence Network provides doctoral researchers with fully funded Ph.D. fellowships and access to a pool of outstanding faculty, comprising directors and independent research group leaders from across the Max Planck Society. The program allows young academics to contribute to the ongoing transformation of the sciences by developing and applying AI methodology.
Methods of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) are transforming scientific exploration and modeling. By constructing data-driven predictive models, AI enables researchers to address phenomena that are intractable for conventional first-principle approaches.
The newly launched Max Planck Artificial Intelligence Network (MP-AIX ) is a Ph.D. Program that provides doctoral researchers with fully funded Ph.D. fellowships and a pool of outstanding faculty comprising directors and independent research group leaders from across the Max Planck Society.
The program allows young academics to contribute to the ongoing transformation of the sciences by developing and applying AI methodology. Admission is competitive and candidates should possess a track record of excellence. Ph.D. students are jointly supervised by directors or group leaders from different Max Planck Institutes, with the possibility of co-advisors from the ELLIS Network, one advisor works in a field close to ML/AI, and the other advisor works in an application area (“X”).
This exclusive new program will support up to 150 Ph.D. students altogether in its first three cohorts starting 2026, 2027 and 2028.
The network is coordinated by the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg together with the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen.
Prof. Dr. Peter Benner, director at MPI Magdeburg, chairs the new AI initiative of the Max Planck Society together with Prof. Bernhard Schölkopf, director at MPI for Intelligent Systems.
At the CSC group in Magdeburg, research will be particularly focused on Scientific Machine Learning.
The Max Planck Artificial Intelligence Network is an initiative by the Max Planck Society and collaborates with ELLIS - European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems.

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.
You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
