Successful debut in the TIME’s ranking and significant gains in the QS Europe ranking

The University of Regensburg achieved an impressive result in the newly published TIME’s World’s Top Universities ranking, securing a global position of 234 out of approximately 5,000 institutions assessed worldwide. At the national level, the university ranked 22nd, placing it among the top 25 universities in Germany.
The University of Regensburg also made substantial improvements in the QS World University Rankings: Europe 2026 and now ranks 242nd out of 958 institutions analyzed across Europe – a significant rise of 42 positions compared to the previous year’s ranking. With this result, the University of Regensburg outperforms 74.8 percent of all institutions evaluated in Europe. Nationally, the UR also improved by 4 places and now ranks 33rd out of 102 institutions in Germany. In Western Europe, the UR once again secured a position in the top 100 and is ranked 82nd, which is an improvement of 13 places compared to the previous year.
„The highly successful entry into the TIME’s ranking and the substantial improvement in the QS ranking confirms that the University of Regensburg is heading in the right direction. Our continuous investments in excellent research, innovative teaching and future-oriented structures are paying off. I am also particularly pleased with the strong gains we achieved in the area of sustainability in the QS ranking. These ranking results encourage us to consistently pursue our strategic goals,” explains University President Prof. Dr. Udo Hebel.
    Successful debut in new ranking
The TIME’s World’s Top Universities ranking was published for the first time by TIME Magazine in collaboration with Statista. Institutions are evaluated based on a range of indicators covering academic performance, innovation and economic impact as well as global engagement.
    Improvements in the QS Ranking
The QS World University Rankings: Europe 2026 form part of one of the world’s most influential international university ranking systems and focus on the European region. It is based on a total of five main criteria, which are designed to reflect the research performance, employability of alumni, learning experience, global engagement, and sustainability of the institutions surveyed. These main criteria are divided into indicators, in each of which a maximum of 100 points can be achieved.
The University of Regensburg improved its scores in nearly all indicators. Particularly noteworthy is the area of sustainability, where the University of Regensburg increased its score by 63.4 points to now 71.3 points. Encouraging changes were also recorded in research, with the score for citations per article rising by 5.8 points to excellent 68.8 points. This puts the University of Regensburg among the top 25 percent of European institutions. In terms of the ratio of academic staff to students, the University of Regensburg ranks 67th in Europe, among the top 10 percent of institutions. Significant increases were also achieved in the indicators for academic reputation and employer reputation. These results demonstrate that the high quality of research and teaching at the University of Regensburg is increasingly recognized and valued both in academia and in industry.
The QS ranking results are based, among other sources, on bibliometric data from over 19.8 million recorded specialist publications, 200 million recorded citations, and a total of approximately 1.5 million nominations from scientists and researchers, as well as about 520,000 nominations from employers. Furthermore, institutions are able to submit selected data directly to QS.
The implementation of concrete measures - such as the adoption of the Sustainability Strategy 2023-2027 and the participation in the QS Sustainability Ranking - has contributed to positive developments in the rankings. This will enable the University of Regensburg to maintain its strong position in the long term.
