Lower Saxony’s universities begin joint project headed by Leibniz University Hannover.
Efficient energy management at Lower Saxony’s universities and universities of applied sciences. This is the goal of the Academic Green IT Alliance project, which has now taken up work under the leadership of Leibniz University Hannover (LUH). All 20 of the public universities and universities of applied sciences in Lower Saxony are taking part. The collaborative project is being led by Dr. Thomas Rupp, head of Leibniz Universität IT Services.
The joint project of the umbrella initiative Hochschule.digital Niedersachen has been granted a total of 10 million euros in funding from the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony and the Volkswagen Foundation through the zukunft.niedersachsen programme. As part of the project, the Lower Saxony competence centre for green IT at university computing centres will be established at Leibniz Universität IT Services (LUIS). Green IT offices will also be set up at nine universities. Over the next four years, they will focus on countering the increasing energy consumption at university computing centres in Lower Saxony.
The project will focus on the introduction of energy management systems, the optimisation of cooling and ventilation concepts, the use of energy-efficient hardware and sustainable IT purchasing. The measures will be tailored to the needs of the individual universities and support the state-wide IT strategy.
The significant increase in digital services coupled with the commitment to operate in a climate-friendly, resource-efficient and sustainable manner necessitates efficient IT energy management. Artificial intelligence and deep learning applications increasingly require specialised systems with a high level of energy consumption (GPU systems). However, demand for computing and storage capacity is increasing across other central IT services as well.
