Future Day at Fraunhofer IST: Insights into the World of Coating Technology

Dr. Simone Kondruweit Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Fraunhofer-Institut für Schicht- und Oberflächentechnik IST

A sheet of metal just 1 millimeter thick, a coating system, and lots of curious questions: At Future Day 2026 at Fraunhofer IST, students were able to experience how a simple surface is transformed into a functional high-tech material. Together with Fraunhofer WKI, the institute opened its doors and gave the young guests a hands-on insight into the world of applied research.

The focus was on the question of how a high-performance surface is created. The 16 girls and 8 boys learned why thorough cleaning is a crucial prerequisite for high-quality coatings and which technologies are used in the process. It became clear how even the smallest impurities can significantly affect the quality of a subsequent layer.

This was particularly illustrated through a practical example: A 1-millimeter-thick metal sheet served as the starting point to demonstrate various steps in coating technology. The students prepared their own samples and were able to observe how wafer-thin layers were applied to their metal sheets in a coating system. Such layers impart specific new properties to surfaces and can thereby, for example, make components more durable, protect them from wear, or extend their service life.

The program also included a look at the analytics department. There, participants could see how researchers examine and evaluate coated surfaces. Modern analytical methods make even the smallest structures visible and help to precisely understand the properties of a coating.

Future Day gave participants a hands-on experience of the research work at Fraunhofer IST and demonstrated the diversity of topics related to materials and surfaces. At the same time, as every year, the event offered a valuable opportunity to spark an early interest in technical careers, scientific questions, and the world of applied research among young people.

Fraunhofer IST offers training in the fields of engineering, IT, and administration. In addition, students have the opportunity to gain initial insights into research practice through internships, thesis projects, or positions as student assistants, and to actively contribute to ongoing research activities.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
