    Resilience for the Cryptography of Tomorrow

    The Cyber Agency is launching a third research project on side-channel resistance in post-quantum cryptography (PQC).

    The Agency for Innovation in Cybersecurity GmbH (Cyber Agency) is expanding its program for future-proof cryptography to a total of three SCA4PQC research projects. The goal is to protect quantum-resistant cryptographic implementations against both algorithmic and side-channel attacks, such as through analysis of power consumption, runtime, or electromagnetic signals. In doing so, the program addresses a central challenge: ensuring the security of cryptographic systems for practical deployment.

    The new QUEST project within the SCA4PQC program is led by Bearing Point GmbH and carried out together with four subcontractors: Hochschule Rhein-Main, Hochschule Darmstadt, NTU Singapore, and Chelpis. The project aims to advance a holistic approach to defending against side-channel attacks on common platforms used in the Internet of Things (IoT) through a practice-oriented methodology, and to provide this as an open test environment over the course of the project.

    The consortium complements side-channel analysis with fault injection attacks, which innovatively examines both methods in combined scenarios to model a strong attacker. The chosen Red Team / Blue Team approach promises to iteratively develop new attack methods and effective countermeasures, while extending secure PQC implementations for ARM and RISC-V to System-on-Chip (SoC) platforms common in Europe.

    With the progress of quantum technologies, migration to post-quantum cryptography is becoming increasingly important. “Even theoretically proven-secure algorithms can fail in practice if side channels are not comprehensively secured”, emphasizes the program lead Dr. Matthias Minihold, highlighting the strategic value of the projects. The approaches developed within the SCA4PQC program combine protection against both classical and quantum-assisted attacks with robust safeguards against physical side channels. The combination of advanced countermeasure development and testing of resilient hardware is crucial for the security of future digital infrastructures.

    During the SCA4PQC call for proposals, the Cyberagentur succeeded in mobilizing internationally leading research institutions to develop novel implementations of side-channel-resistant post-quantum cryptography that benefit Europe’s digital sovereignty, particularly Germany’s.
