Fraunhofer IIS beteiligt sich an der "Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI)" (englisch)

Elvira Gerhäuser Unternehmenskommunikation
Fraunhofer-Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen IIS

January 22, 1999: The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits(Fraunhofer IIS) confirms its participation in the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) that has been initiated by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) and the International Federation of the Phonographic
    Industries (IFPI).
Dr. Karlheinz Brandenburg, Head of the Fraunhofer IIS Multimedia department said: "For several years, Fraunhofer IIS has already been active in developing methods to facilitate the secure distribution of music over Internet. We believe that open standards based compression and copyright protection is ultimately a huge benefit for the consumers.
We will provide SDMI a lot of standardisation experience from our work on MPEG audio compression (including MPEG Layer-3 aka .mp3 and MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding) and MPEG-4 IPMP (Intellectual Property Management
and Protection). We plan to be a very active partner within
SDMI and welcome the opportunity to work together with the international record industries as well as with other leading technology companies."

    Note for Editors:
    -----------------

Fraunhofer IIS is the leading research laboratory in the area of audio coding. Since the start of the audio coding work some ten years ago, Fraunhofer IIS has participated actively in the development of audio compression algorithms. Major parts of MPEG Layer-3 (MP3), the most popular format in the Internet, have been devised in Erlangen. Another
coding algorithm that was developed in co-operation with experts from Fraunhofer IIS is MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), which is the most efficient coding algorithm currently available: AAC offers a data reduction with a factor of 16 while maintaining CD quality.

Besides working on audio coding technology, Fraunhofer IIS has developed one of the first mechanisms to technically
protect intellectual property rights (the Multimedia Protection Protocol, MMP) and is working on audio watermarking technologies.
Moreover, Fraunhofer IIS is active in international efforts to develop methods to technically manage and protect intellectual property, including the MPEG-4 work on Intellectual Property Management & Protection, the Audio Engineering Society's (AES) activities on "Internet Audio Delivery Systems" and the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI).

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
