Prisma Ukraïna: New Dossier on Forced Displacement

Georges Khalil Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Forum Transregionale Studien

Fragmented Lives in Times of War: Displacement Within and From Ukraine, the third volume in the “Forum Transregionale Studien – Dossiers” series, has been published by transcript Verlag. Edited by Lidia Kuzemska, the open-access publication examines the experiences and challenges of Ukrainians displaced within the country, refugees across Europe, and of women who voluntarily remained in Ukraine despite Russia's full-scale invasion.

Across nine chapters, the volume explores diverse experiences of displacement and everyday life during wartime. It examines the situations of Ukrainians in Sweden, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic, as well as internally displaced persons (IDPs) and those who voluntarily chose immobility. How do Ukrainians experience and respond to different reception and welfare systems? How do they navigate ongoing violence and uncertainty? What role do digital connections play in times of fragmentation? How are Ukrainian mothers faring in Germany, Poland, or Slovenia, and how do flight and displacement affect their sense of time and memory?

As editor and academic coordinator of the research group PRISMA UKRAЇNA: War, Migration, Memory (2023-2025) Lidia Kuzemska explains, “Ukrainians feel, live with, and live through uncertainties, whether mentally, intellectually, or bodily. Their lives are fragmented temporally, spatially and socially into ‘before’ and ‘after’ the war began. This book focuses on the experiences of those Ukrainians forced to migrate within and from Ukraine as a result of the Russian invasion.”

This dossier builds on the international conference “Ukrainian Un/Certainties: Mobilities, Memories, and Representations in Times of War,” which was organised in November 2024 by the PRISMA UKRAЇNA research group at the Forum for Transregional Studien.

The research programme PRISMA UKRAЇNA – Research Network Eastern Europe was founded in 2014 by historian Andrii Portnov at the Forum Transregionale Studien. Its central idea is to approach Ukraine not as an object of study but as a point of departure and a prism for addressing questions that are relevant both within Ukraine and across Europe and its neighbouring regions.

The research group PRISMA UKRAЇNA: War, Migration, Memory was established in 2022 by sociologist Viktoriya Sereda at the Forum Transregionale Studien and concluded its work in 2025. It brought together Ukrainian scholars working collaboratively from different cities across Ukraine and from places of refuge in Germany. The group's activities were supported by research communication and project administration at the Forum. Both the research group and the publication were funded by the Berlin Senate Department for Higher Education, Health and Long-Term Care, the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the Marga and Kurt Möllgaard Foundation, and the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS.

The Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin is a research institution dedicated to fostering cross-border collaboration among scholars from different disciplinary and regional backgrounds working on shared questions. It is committed to open area studies and non-hierarchical forms of research and receives institutional funding from the Berlin Senate Department for Higher Education, Health and Long-Term Care.

Fragmented Lives in Times of War is published in the “Forum Transregionale Studien – Dossiers” series. Dossiers bundle texts on specific topics, drawing on research programs, initiatives, projects, or academic events organised by the Forum or its partners. The Forum’s dossiers are published in print and as digital open-access editions by transcript Verlag. They are tailored to the needs of scholars from different regions and disciplines who work collaboratively and in networks. The Forum uses this format for revised articles from series on the TRAFO – Blog for Transregional Research, for the publication of workshop papers, or as an integral part of its writing workshops.

This publication was made possible with funding from the Gerda Henkel Foundation and the Berlin Senate Department for Science, Health, and Care. It is now available from transcript Verlag (ISBN: 978-3-8376-8156-7) and can be downloaded as an open-access publication (DOI: 10.14361/9783839477427).
