Cantor Medal (2026) Awarded to Mathematician Gerhard Huisken

    Berlin, July 7, 2026. Gerhard Huisken, professor of mathematics at the University of Tübingen and director of the Oberwolfach Mathematical Research Institute (MFO, an institute of the Leibniz Association), will receive the 2026 Cantor Medal from the German Mathematical Society (DMV). The DMV Executive Board recently made this decision unanimously upon the recommendation of an external selection committee. The Cantor Medal is the DMV’s most prestigious scientific award. It is typically awarded every two years and is named after the mathematician and co-founder of the DMV, Georg Cantor. The award consists of a certificate, an engraved silver medal, and a prize money of 4,000 euros.

    “With this year’s Cantor Medal, the DMV Executive Board honors Gerhard Huisken’s outstanding scientific achievements. They are of extraordinary depth and have profound impact on the fields of partial differential equations and differential geometry,” said DMV President Jürg Kramer in his statement. "I extend my warmest congratulations to Gerhard Huisken on receiving the Cantor Medal!” The medal will be presented at a ceremony during the DMV’s annual conference, which will take place in Konstanz, Germany, from September 7 to 10.

    Gerhard Huisken’s research focuses on partial differential equations, differential geometry, and their applications in physics. He is internationally renowned, among other things, for proving a version of the Riemann-Penrose inequality (together with Tom Ilmanen) and for his fundamental contributions to the theory of mean curvature flux, including the Huisken monotonicity formula, which is named after him. In 2003, Huisken was awarded the prestigious Leibniz Prize by the German Research Foundation (DFG), and in February 2026, he received the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, from the Federal Republic of Germany. Huisken is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sci-ences, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and the Academia Europaea. He is also a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and a recipient of the Australian Mathematical Society medal.
