Das European Institute for the Media (EIM) wird Anfang 2005 von Düsseldorf nach Dortmund ziehen. Mit dem Umzug verbunden ist der Abschluss einer Kooperationsvereinbarung des Institutes mit der Universität Dortmund.
Arbeitsschwerpunkte des Instituts, das 1983 in Manchester gegründet wurde und seit 1991 auf Initiative des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen seinen Sitz in Düsseldorf hat, sind alle Fragestellungen, die mit der europäischen Medienentwicklung zu tun haben. Das Europäische Medieninstitut beobachtet, dokumentiert und analysiert die Entwicklung der Medien in Europa. Dabei stehen politische, wirtschaftliche, rechtliche und technologische Aspekte im Mittelpunkt. Leiter des Institutes ist Prof. Dr. Jo Groebel, der seit kurzem einen Lehrauftrag am Institut für Journalistik der Universität Dortmund hat.
