In August, several thousand AI experts will gather in Bremen for the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI). The big questions surrounding AI will be brought to the city through lectures, hands-on activities, and discussion forums. The University of Bremen is involved in many of these events.
The Summer of AI is organized by IJCAI-ECAI, the U Bremen Research Alliance (UBRA), and WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen. The program features events spanning science, technology, business, education, and culture, including international academic conferences, public lectures, AI lounges, hands-on activities, networking events, and art installations. Thus, until German Unity Day, Bremen will present itself as a prominent hub for artificial intelligence and digital transformation over several months.
The University of Bremen will host the following program events:
CUI 2026 – ACM Conversational User Interfaces Conference
From July 21 to 24, 2026, the university will host the ACM Conversational User Interfaces Conference. This event will bring together the international community of speech and dialogue technology experts in Bremen. The conference will connect researchers and practitioners to discuss current developments in speech-based human-technology interaction.
ICCBR – International Case-Based Reasoning Conference
From August 13 to 16, 2026, the University of Bremen will host the world’s leading conference on case-based reasoning. Researchers from around the globe will discuss current developments and innovative approaches for leveraging past experiences to solve complex societal, environmental, and economic challenges.
IJCAI-ECAI 2026 AI Panel Discussion – New Approaches for Safe AI Agents
AI systems are becoming increasingly powerful, autonomous, and deeply integrated into everyday life. As these systems begin to plan, act, and make decisions on behalf of people and organizations, new questions arise. How can such systems be designed to be safe, trustworthy, and accountable? What forms of oversight are required? How can technical progress be reconciled with societal expectations, regulatory requirements, and public trust? These questions will be discussed at the IJCAI-ECAI 2026 panel on AI on August 16 at 6:00 p.m. in the Lecture Hall Building (Keksdose) at the University of Bremen. AI Experience: Hands-On AI
At the AI x Open Lab, you can experience artificial intelligence firsthand. Students, apprentices, and interested visitors can look forward to interactive stations, exciting experiments, and insights into current research and future technologies in the Banking Hall at the Forum at Domshof. Admission is free, and the event is suitable for groups of up to ten students or apprentices. Individuals can drop by daily from August 17 to 22 between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. without registering. AI Lecture: International Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence
The Summer of AI will begin with a lecture in the Banquet Hall of the Bremen State Parliament on August 17 at 4:30 p.m. After opening remarks by Senator Dr. Henrike Müller and University of Bremen President Prof. Dr. Jutta Günther, Prof. Toby Walsh, one of the world’s most renowned AI researchers, will offer insights into the future of AI. CAVECORE PhD School
CAVECORE is a European doctoral network coordinated by the University of Bremen that trains the next generation of researchers in the field of cognitive robotics. The CAVECORE Bremen School will take place at the University of Bremen from August 24 to 28. It brings together doctoral students, researchers, and project partners for academic training, professional exchange, and networking. The focus is on safe, reliable, and adaptive robot systems that can adjust to real-world environments and meet the requirements of responsible AI.
