Wie entsteht das "Eigene" in der Architektur vor dem Hintergrund von
Globalisierung und Regionalisierung? Welchen Einfluss hat das "Fremde"
auf die Schaffung architektonischer Identität? Diese Fragen werden vom
6. - 8. Dezember 2004 auf der internationalen Konferenz "Architecture
and Identity" im Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, diskutiert. Die
Konferenz wendet sich damit fachübergreifend an ein Publikum aus
Architektur, Sozialwissenschaften, Kunsthistorikern, Historikern und
benachbarten Disziplinen.
Unter den etwa 60 Referenten aus 36 Ländern sind als Protagonisten der
weltweiten Debatte der Architekt Rasem Badran (Aga-Khan-Preisträger,
Jordanien), der Soziologe Anthony King (USA), die
Architekturtheoretikerin Liane Lefaivre (Österreich) und der Historiker
Dogan Kuban (Türkei). Die Leitung der Konferenz liegt bei Prof. Dr.
Peter Herrle von der HABITAT UNIT, Fachgebiet Architektur und
Stadtentwicklung im globalen Zusammenhang, Technische Universität
Berlin. Gefördert wird die Veranstaltung wie das damit verbundene
einjährige Forschungsprojekt von der VolkswagenStiftung.
Konferenzsprache ist Englisch, es werden Teilnehmer aus der ganzen Welt
erwartet.
Die Konferenz gliedert sich sowohl regional als auch thematisch. Im
ersten Teil werden die Ergebnisse des Forschungsprojekts mit
Regionalstudien in Brasilien, Mexiko, dem Nahen Osten, Indien und
Singapur diskutiert. Im zweiten Teil finden parallel fünf thematisch
strukturierte Diskussionsforen statt.

Panel I: The Making of Local Identity
This panel focuses on the question of how local identity is currently
being made.
Panel II: The Global and the Local
This panel deals with the impact of globalization on local architecture
and related discourses.
Panel III: Theoretical Concepts - Revisited
This panel discusses the validity of concepts that have been developed
over the past 20 years to explain contemporary phenomena in architecture.
Panel IV: Diversity as a Pattern of Local Architecture
This panel focuses on the diversification of styles and architectural
languages.
Panel V: Identity and (Invented) Traditions
This panel discusses the role and meaning of tradition in the making of
identity in contemporary architecture.
