Fraunhofer AIRBAG Award
Award for special merits at the development of airbag technology
(Fraunhofer ICT) The "Fraunhofer ICT Airbag Award 2004" was given to Graduate Engineer Klaus Kompaß from BMW.
Klaus Kompaß received the award from the organizers Prof. Dr. Hiltmar Schubert und Dr.-Ing. Karl-Friedrich Ziegahn on the occasion of the AIRBAG 2004 Symposium in Karlsruhe at the beginning of December. In his laudation Prof. Schubert appreciated the merits of the laureate who has been dedicatedly working for the occupant safety in deciding position at BMW and Autoliv and who has been striking a new path with clear aims and leadership at the development and implementation of new technologies. Due to his commitment some important innovations are nowadays available for the customer.
In addition he has untiringly explained the benefit of occupant protection at various public occasions and has aroused enthusiasm for it.
Klaus Kompaß has done pioneer work on a quite essential section of airbag technology, namely the lateral head protection with sidebags. One concrete and worldwide known example is the so-called "Weißwurst" (Inflatable Tubular Structure ITS), which was launched by BMW as first producer in the middle of the nineties. In the meantime the accident statistics show the large benefit of lateral head protection during the real accident.
The AIRBAG-Symposium which is organized by the Fraunhofer-Institut für Chemische Technology ICT, Pfinztal, every two years in Karlsruhe has developed during one decade to the worldwide largest airbag industry meeting place with constantly more than thousand participants.
