Die Technische Universität Darmstadt nutzt ihre Autonomie auch im Detail: Erstmals in Hessen hat nicht der Wissenschaftsminister, sondern ein Universitäts-Präsident förmlich einen neu berufenen Professor ernannt. TUD-Präsident Johann-Dietrich Wörner führte am Donnerstag Gerhard Birkl in das Amt des Professors für Physik an der Universität ein.
Birkl (39) vertritt das Fach Experimentalphysik in Forschung und Lehre. Er wird Arbeiten zu physikalischen Grundlagen und zur Anwendung der modernen Optik (Quantenoptik, Informationsverarbeitung, Laserphysik) vorantreiben.
Birkl studierte von 1984 bis 1990 Physik an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) und schloss mit dem Diplom ab. Danach arbeitete er vier Jahre lang als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik in Garching. Parallel promovierte er an der LMU und erlangte 1994 den Doktorgrad. In den Jahren 1994 und 1995 forschte Birkl als Stipendiat der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung am National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, USA. Es schloss sich ein Forschungsaufenthalt in Frankreich an. Von 1996 bis 2002 arbeitete der Wissenschaftler am Institut für Quantenoptik der Uni Hannover - ein Ertrag war seine Habilitation. Titel der Habilitationsschrift: "Lasergekühlte Atome in optischen Mikrostrukturen." Birkl war danach bis zu seinem Ruf an die TU Darmstadt Privatdozent an der Uni Hannover. Der neue Professor ist verheiratet und Vater zweier Kinder.
