For her research about the development of cancer and metastases biologist and cancer researcher Dr. Ulrike Ziebold from the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch has been awarded the Monika-Kutzner-Prize of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. Dr. Ziebold received the prize worth 10 000 Euros on Friday, May 27, 2005 in Berlin. In 1999 another cancer researcher from the MDC, Dr. Jürgen Behrens (now Professor at the University of Erlangen), was given this prize. Both scientists have been working in the research group of the cell biologist and cancer researcher Prof. Walter Birchmeier.

Born in Stuttgart in 1967, Dr. Ziebold studied developmental biology in Göttingen and completed her Diploma in 1993 at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Biophysical Chemistry (Göttingen), her Doctoral Thesis in 1998 at the MPI for Immunobiology (Freiburg). Before coming to the MDC in 2003, she worked as a Postdoc for five years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge (USA). In 2003 she received a Helmholtz-Grant from the MDC to work as a young group leader in the laboratory of Prof. Birchmeier in Berlin-Buch. In 2004 she received the Marie-Curie Grant for Excellence within the 6th Framework Programme of the European Commission, which runs for four years. This grant enabled her to set up a research group of her own on "Genetics of Tumor Suppression and Metastasis". Using embryonic stem cells from rodents she is searching for new types of mechanisms in cancer development.

The Monika-Kutzner Foundation has been established in 1979 by Christa Kutzner. The Foundation carries the name of her daughter, who died from cancer only 33 years old in 1974. The foundation aims at fostering research on cancer diseases. It came into existence in 1994, after the death of the founder. The Kutzner Prize is being awarded annually since 1998 by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences.
