Ungebremstes Wachstum und Metastasenbildung von Krebszellen wird durch ein evolutionär hochkonserviertes Protein kontrolliert, haben Wissenschaftler des Max-Planck-Instituts für Infektionsbiologie herausgefunden.
Krebs entsteht zumeist durch Schädigungen im Erbgut. Häufig werden dadurch Schalterproteine verändert, die Zellen auf ständige Vermehrung programmieren. Das in Krebszellen am häufigsten betroffene Schalterprotein ist das Ras-Protein, das in seiner entarteten Form nicht nur das Wachstum von Tumoren, sondern auch das Auswandern von Krebszellen aus dem Primärtumor (Metastasenbildung) anregt. Daran ist ein Protein namens Prohibitin maßgeblich beteiligt, wie neue Forschungsergebnisse aus der Abteilung Molekulare Biologie des Max-Planck-Instituts für Infektionsbiologie zeigen. Die von Thomas Rudel und seinem Team gemachte Entdeckung offenbarte überraschend, dass dieses Protein eine übergeordnete Rolle bei Vorgängen spielt, die für die Entstehung bösartiger Tumore verantwortlich sind, veröffentlicht in der neuesten Ausgabe von "Nature Cell Biology" (Nature Cell Biology, 24. Juli 2005).
