Auf der Generalversammlung der URSI (Internationale Union für Radiowissenschaften) in der letzten Woche in Toronto/Canada wurde Prof. Dr. Kristian Schlegel vom Max-Planck-Institut für Aeronomie/Katlenburg-Lindau zu einem der vier Vizepräsidenten dieser Organisation gewählt. URSI vertritt weltweit die Interessen von etwa 3000 Wissenschaftlern, die Radiomethoden in ihren Forschungen anwenden, wie z.B. die Lindauer Wissenschaftler bei der Erforschung der Atmosphäre und Ionosphäre mit Radarsystemen. Weitere Gebiete der URSI-Wissenschaftler sind die Radiostronomie, der Einsatz von Radiomethoden in Medizin und Biologie sowie die Weiterentwicklung moderner Kommunikationssysteme. Prof. Schlegel war vom deutschen Landesverband der URSI als Kandidat vorgeschlagen worden. Die Amtszeit wird 3 Jahre betragen. Präsident der URSI ist der Japaner Prof. Dr. Hiroshi Matsumoto, die anderen 3 Vizepräsidenten kommen aus Israel, Kanada und Polen.
Prof. Schlegel hat in Karlsruhe Physik und Mathematik studiert, promovierte in Kiel und ist seit mehr als 30 Jahren als Wissenschaftler am Max-Planck-Institut für Aeronomie tätig. Er ist seit 1990 Privatdozent, seit 1996 außerplanmäßiger Professor an der Universität Göttingen. Seit 1981 ist er in verschiedenen Positionen in der URSI tätig.
