On July 5th, 2006, Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information, Society and Media will officially launch the European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration - EPoSS. The launch event will take place in Brussels.

The future of Micro- and Nanosystems consists of integrated smart systems that will revolutionise our daily life. Miniaturised smart systems invisible for the user will contribute to making cars safer by recognising objects and supporting the driver. They will help to reduce the emissions of aircrafts by applying complex sensing systems for power optimisation and adaptive aerodynamics. People will experience ambient intelligence in their everyday life on account of self-organising sensor and actor systems.

Smart systems will be able to sense and diagnose a situation, they will be predictive and therefore, they decide and help to decide. Smart systems will address and identify each other and enable the product they are incorporated in to interact with the environment and with other smart systems. They will be extremely miniaturised, highly reliable and energy autonomous.

EPoSS is an industry driven policy initiative defining R&D, innovation needs and policy recommendations related to Smart Systems Integration and integrated Micro- and Nanosystems. EPoSS is contributing to the Lisbon Strategy, aiming at fostering economic growth, creating more and better jobs and ensuring sustainable prosperity in Europe.

At present, industrial sectors represented in EPoSS are automotive, aerospace, telecommunication, medical technologies, and logistics/RFID.

The launch event will take place at the Renaissance Hotel Brussels, Grand Ballroom, Rue du Parnasse 19, 1050 Brussels, Belgium.
