Erstmalig seit ihrer Gründung besetzte die Hochschule für Jüdische Studien (HfJS) den Lehrstuhl "Geschichte des jüdischen Volkes" mit einer Absolventin aus dem eigenen Haus. Birgit E. Klein, geboren 1961 in Krefeld, studierte Judaistik, Theologie und Klassische Philologie u. a. in Jerusalem und Heidelberg. Von 1993 bis 2005 war sie als Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in Berlin, Duisburg und Düsseldorf tätig. Von 2001 bis 2004 forschte sie mit einem Lise-Meitner-Habilitationsstipendium des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen. 1998 promovierte sie im Fach Jüdische Studien in Duisburg mit "Wohltat und Hochverrat", einer Untersuchung über jüdische Autonomie und ihre obrigkeitliche Instrumentalisierung. 2006 habilitierte sie sich an der Freien Universität Berlin im Fach Judaistik mit einer Studie über das jüdische Ehegüter- und Erbrecht in Norm und Praxis. Seither hat sie den Lehrstuhl "Geschichte des jüdischen Volkes" an der HfJS inne und amtiert seit dem Wintersemester 2006/07 auch als Studiendekanin.
