New factory concept at Microtechnology / Hannover Messe: Square Foot Manufacturing makes micro production more precise

Scaled macro-facilities are used for the manufacturing of micro technology products frequently - the result are methods much too large for the production of miniaturized parts. The laboratory for production technology (LaFT) from the Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg presents at Microtechnology/Hannover Messe (April 16 to 20, 2007) as a solution a new factory concept, which saves energy and makes micro production more precise: the Square Foot Manufacturing. In the context of the IVAM Product Market "Micro, Nano & Materials" besides LaFT 58 exhibitors present new high-tech ideas for industrial applications.

In order to develop a manufacturing unit suitable to the small work piece dimensions in the micro area, the researchers from LaFT consistently developed the concept of Desktop Manufacturing up to Square Foot Manufacturing. With this factory concept a surface of 30 times 30 centimeters is already sufficient for the placement of several small units.

"The ratio between path length and component size in former manufacturing units is simply not suiting for micro parts. If we make the work space smaller, the machines become more precise, because the static, thermal and dynamic effects on their accuracy decline. With the diminishing construction volume price and energy consumption sink ", states Professor Dr. Jens Wulfsberg from the LaFT. A further advantage, according to Wulfsberg, is that the machines can be arranged more easily in process chains and adapted to new working tasks. Altogether the mini factory needs fewer infrastructures - an argument, which could encourage small and medium-sized companies to get in on micro manufacturing. Contrary to the Desktop Manufacturing the components of the unit are not combined in a fixed factory, but rather limited to simple functions.

The company IMS bv from the Netherlands also demonstrates new ideas for micro production. In micro assembly the supply of micro parts is often difficult due to adhesive forces. With its Vision Inspection Feeding System (VIFS), IMS offers a solution suitable for the automatic feeding and inspection of micro parts. 3D-Micromac AG introduces a picosecond laser station for precise, high-speed machining. It cuts or drills metals or semiconductors in the industrial environment.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
