Gastvortrag von Prof. Dr. Richard Pells im Einstein Forum
Der Studiengang Kulturarbeit an der Fachhochschule Potsdam konnte Prof. Richard Pells von der University of Texas in Austin zu einem Gastvortrag gewinnen. Der renommierte Historiker wird am 24. Mai von 17.30 bis 19.00 Uhr über "Transatlantic Misunderstandings: Anti-Americanism in Europe and Anti-Europeanism in America" sprechen. Die Veranstaltung findet im Einstein Forum, An Neuen Markt 7 in Potsdam statt.
Richard Pells zeigt, dass die Missverständnisse zwischen Amerika und Europa mit unterschiedlichen Werten und Lebensstilen verbunden sind. Differenzen in der Außenpolitik sind oft auch Zeichen grundsätzlicher Haltungen zu amerikanischer bzw. europäischer Kultur.
Wechselseitige Zuschreibungen wie unkultiviert, naiv, ängstlich, undiplomatisch, realitätsfern, rückwärtsbezogen etc. werden über den Atlantik hin und her geschickt und verfestigen die Vorurteile. Die Vorurteile und gegenseitigen Stereotype lassen sich bis weit ins 19. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen. Sie zeigen aber auch bei aktuellen politischen Auseinandersetzungen Wirkungen.
Die Veranstaltung findet mit Unterstützung der US-Botschaft in Berlin statt.
Der Vortrag wird in Englisch gehalten. Anschließend besteht die Möglichkeit zur Diskussion, auch in deutscher Sprache.

Biografische Angaben zu Richard Pells
Richard Pells is Professor of History at the University of Texas / Austin and a specialist in 20th Century American cultural and intellectual history. He researches the global impact of American culture, and the ways that foreign cultures have affected the United States.
Prof. Pells has taught abroad at the universities of Sao Paulo, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Sydney, Bonn, Berlin, Cologne, and Vienna.
He writes often for newspapers and magazines, including the International Herald Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, and the Chronicle of Higher Education.
He received his PhD from Harvard University in 1969.
