Nobel Peace Prize 2007 goes to the IPCC

Uta Pohlmann Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung

Potsdam - The Nobel Committee in Oslo has decided today that the Nobel Peace Prize 2007 will go to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Al Gore. They will share the prize, in two equal parts, for their efforts to provide society with sound knowledge of causes and impacts of anthropogenic climate change on the one hand and with knowledge about strategies for climate protection as well as adaptation on the other hand.

Numerous scientists of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) have contributed substantially to this year's IPCC report as lead authors or review editors. "With the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the IPCC the debate whether we are changing the global climate should be resolved", says Prof. Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Director of the Potsdam Institute. "Now it it is crucial to explore further the impacts of global warming and to focus on the development of solution strategies."
