Die Frage nach der Funktionsweise des Software-Markts wurde von den Wirtschaftswissenschaften erstaunlicherweise bislang kaum betrachtet. Die Lücke war für Prof. Dr. Peter Buxmann, Wirtschaftsinformatiker an der TU Darmstadt, und Prof. Dr. Thomas Hess, Wirtschaftsinformatiker an der Universität München, Anlass, die "Software Economics Group Darmstadt-München" zu gründen.
Kaum eine andere Industrie hat die Gesellschaft so nachhaltig verändert wie die Softwareindustrie. Das Produkt "Software" unterscheidet sich jedoch grundlegend von klassischen Industriegütern und Dienstleistungen. Was also sind die Spielregeln des Softwaremarkts? - Gerade zur jetzt beginnenden CeBIT 2008 eine spannende Frage.
Neben Preis- und Lizenzmodellen für Software-Produkte und Wertschöpfungsstrukturen der Branche untersucht das Team der Software Economics Group auch neueste Trends in der Softwareindustrie. Hierzu gehören neue Geschäftsmodelle wie Software as a Service, das Outsourcing der Software-Entwicklung in Niedriglohnländer, der Einsatz von so genannten "Serviceorientierten Architekturen" (SOA), die Ökonomie modularisierter Softwareproduktion sowie die ökonomische Bedeutung von "Open-Source"-Software.
