Im EU-Projekt SMErobot wurde ein technischer Durchbruch bei Leichtbau-Servoantrieben für Roboteranwendungen erreicht. Der neue Servoantrieb erreicht eine einzigartige Leistungsdichte (d.h. erreichbare Motorleistungen im Verhältnis zu einem Gewicht) durch die kompakte Verbindung neuartiger Motor-, Brems- und Sensorkomponenten mit den neuesten hoch untersetzenden Getrieben der Firma Harmonic Drive. Auf der AUTOMATICA 2008 werden Prototypen der Servoantriebe sowohl auf einem Prüfstand als auch als Antriebsmodul in einem Leichtbaurobotergelenk, welches an einem von Grund auf neuen, kinematischen Roboter befestigt wird, vorgeführt. Dieses neue Roboterkonzept ist eine kostengünstige Roboterautomatisierungslösung für anspruchsvolle Industrieanwendungen. Der Servoantrieb wurde von ABB Robotics konstruiert und integriert, in Zusammenarbeit mit HDD Servo Motors, die diese innovative Kombination von Motorkomponente, Bremse und kapazitiven Encoder entwickelt haben.
