Zum Jahr der Mathematik 2008 veranstaltet die Fachrichtung Mathematik der Universität des Saarlandes in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Filmhaus Saarbrücken das MathFilm Festival 2008. Mit einer Reihe von mathematischen Filmen wird die breite Öffentlichkeit dazu eingeladen, einen spannenden und ungewohnten Zugang zur Mathematik zu erhalten. Alle Filme werden von Referenten, die der Fachbereich Mathematik der Universität des Saarlandes eingeladen hat, im Anschluss kommentiert und zur Diskussion gestellt. Das MathFilm Festival startet am 25. Juni um 20 Uhr mit dem Film "A Beautiful Mind" im Filmhaus Saarbrücken.
Der Oscar-prämierte Film "A Beautiful Mind" von Ron Howard mit Russel Crowe in der Hauptrolle ist eine an die Biographie des Nobelpreisträgers und Mathematikers John Forbes Nash angelehnte Darstellung von Genie und Wahnsinn. Im Anschluss an den Film wird die Diplom-Psychologin Christine Pop über die Persönlichkeit der Filmfigur Nash unter psychoanalytischen Aspekten referieren. Prof. Dr. Frank-Olaf Schreyer (Universität des Saarlandes) wird die Bedeutung von John Nash als Mathematiker erläutern. Danach besteht die Gelegenheit zur Diskussion.
Weitere Filme zu Themen der Mathematik werden an den folgenden Terminen gezeigt:
"PI" am 27. August
"Proof" am 17. September
"Enigma" am 22. Oktober
Auch im Wintersemester soll das Festival fortgesetzt werden.
