Der Senat der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft hat auf seiner Sitzung am 24. Oktober in Berlin die Errichtung der zunächst auf fünf Jahre befristeten Fraunhofer-Arbeitsgruppe für Medizinische Biotechnologie AMBT in Potsdam als Außenstelle des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Biomedizinsche Technik IBMT in St. Ingbert zum 1.1.2001 beschlossen.
Die Leitung des Instituts im Saarland wie der Außenstelle in Potsdam wird Prof. Günter Fuhr übernehmen. Er ist gegenwärtig Professor an der Humboldt-Universität Berlin und hat einen Ruf an die Universität Saarbrücken erhalten.
Die neue Potsdamer Fraunhofer-Arbeitsgruppe für Medizinische Biotechnologie AMBT wird aus der schon existierenden Projektgruppe von Dr. Bier in Potsdam-Rehbrücke und der Berliner Arbeitsgruppe von Prof. Fuhr gebildet, die sich an der Humboldt-Universität befindet. Die AMBT wird etwa sechzig feste Mitarbeiter umfassen.
Ziel der AMBT in Potsdam ist es, innovative biomedizinische Technologien für die Industrie zu entwickeln. Dafür werden analytische Methoden, Mess-Systeme, Mikrowerkzeuge, Handhabungssysteme und Module, biohybride Produkte sowie Datenverarbeitungsalgorithmen bereitgestellt.
Folgende Technologiefelder werden an AMBT bearbeitet: Molekulare Bioanalytik und Bioelektronik, Biomikrosysteme, Biogradientensysteme und oberflächenbasierte Biochips, Mikrotrenntechniken für Proteine und andere Makromoleküle, Nanobiotechnologie auf der Basis tierischer und humaner Zellkulturen.
