Soziologe John Urry zu Gast bei der internationalen Konferenz "The Thrill of the Still" an der Universität Mannheim
Stellen wir uns vor, die Welt stünde still - würde dies den Planeten retten? Die Frage des Soziologen John Urry, Professor an der Universität Lancaster in Großbritannien, reicht direkt ins Herz der Konferenz "The Thrill of the Still - Analyzing Global Processes between Mobility and Immobility". Die Tagung findet vom 12. bis 14. Juni 2008 an der Universität Mannheim statt.
Im Mittelpunkt der Veranstaltung steht die spannungsreiche Beziehung von Mobilität und Immobilität in einer zunehmend globalisierten Zeit. Mit Prof. John Urry konnte das Promotionskolleg "Formations of the Global: Globalisierung aus kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive" einen ausgewiesenen Experten für den öffentlichen Abendvortrag der Konferenz am Donnerstag, 12. Juni 2008, gewinnen. John Urry ist einer der führenden Forscher auf dem Gebiet der Mobilitätsstudien. In seinen Veröffentlichungen untersucht er u. a. das Verhältnis von sozialen und räumlichen Strukturen. Sein Vortrag "Would Standing Still Save the Planet?" wird die Kernthemen der Konferenz umreißen.
Um 17 Uhr wird Prof. Ulfried Reichardt, der Leiter des Promotionskollegs, am 12. Juni das Abendprogramm eröffnen, das in der Universität Mannheim, in B6, Raum A0.01, stattfinden wird. Im Anschluss spricht John Urry. Ein Empfang rundet den ersten Abend der Konferenz ab, zu der das Kolleg alle Interessierten herzlich willkommen heißt.
Das Spannungsfeld von Mobilität und Immobilität wird auch in den folgenden beiden Tagen internationale Wissenschaftler aus ganz unterschiedlichen Forschungsgebieten im Mittelbau des Mannheimer Schlosses (Raum M271) beschäftigen. Während Mobilität im Rahmen des Globalisierungsdiskurses ein Schlüsselwort ist, gerät ihre Beziehung zu festen Orten und Stillstand oft in Vergessenheit. So ermöglichen neue Kommunikationstechnologien zwar weltweiten Informationsaustausch, die Nutzer bleiben jedoch meist an ihrem Platz haften, sind in gewisser Hinsicht immobil. Jugendliche chatten online über große Distanzen - in ihrem Zimmer sitzend. Oder anders gewendet: Manager halten durch mobiles Internet und Telefon Kontakt zum Ruhepol Familie - ersehnte Immobilität manifestiert sich über mobile Datenübertragung. Solchen Lücken des Diskurses geht die Konferenz "The Thrill of the Still" deshalb auf verschiedenen Gebieten wie Kunst, Architektur oder Migration nach. Konferenz und Eröffnungsveranstaltung finden in englischer Sprache statt.
