In der alternswissenschaftlichen und alternspolitischen Vortragsreihe des Deutschen Zentrums für Altersfragen (DZA), Berlin, wird Kevin J. McKee (Sheffield Institute for Studies on Ageing, University of Sheffield, UK) am 25. September 2008 um 17:30 zum Thema "Resisting Frailty in Later Life: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, and Environmental Influences" referieren.
Although 'frailty' is a term commonly used in geriatric medicine to describe an older person in a poor state of health and at risk of decline, there is no universally shared definition of the term. This presentation will consider the lack of psychological theory informing the concept of frailty, and relate the concept to other theoretical frameworks for understanding transitions in later life, such as the Third/Fourth Age and the Body Drop. Psychosocial processes and contexts that are important for how frailty manifests in an older person will be discussed, with reference to re-search on falls and recovery, reminiscence, the carer/cared-for relationship, and the physical environment in residential care settings. The presentations will conclude with a discussion of the problem of defining and measuring concepts such as frailty, well-being, and quality of life in older people, and the significance of moving beyond an individualistic model of frailty.
