Science Express to travel through India again

Barbara Abrell Referat Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V.

The Indian Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Kapil Sibal, has announced a repeat of the science train's tour through India of last year. The latest tour is scheduled for the beginning of December 2008

The exhibition train is to stop in 51 Indian cities, 40 of which were not on the route of its first itinerary. Departing from Delhi, the train will travel across a wide variety of India's federal states, such as Punjab, Assam, West Bengal, Kerala and even Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state in India, covering nearly 17,000 kilometres in 180 days. The objective of this second trip is to attract young people to the exhibition in particular, and to spark their passion for science and technology. To this end, the Max Planck Society and its German exhibition partners have donated the majority of the exhibits to the Department of Science and Technology after the first successful journey.

Based on the successful Indian model of the project - the Science Express attracted more than 2 million visitors during the six months of its first tour - an exhibition train will also be launched in Germany in 2009. This was announced by the Federal Minister for Education and Research, Annette Schavan, in Berlin. Between March and October 2009, the "Expedition Future" train will stop in 60 cities in all of Germany's 16 federal states as part of the science year 2009, which is organized under the heading "Research Expedition Germany". The Max Planck Society is organising this "exhibition on tracks" with the participation of several universities, major research organisations and enterprises.

"The great acclaim received by the Science Express in India has convinced us to launch a similar project on our rails", said the President of the Max Planck Society, Professor Peter Gruss.
