"Once upon a fraction of time and other stories" exhibition - BAM connects science and art

Dr. Ulrike Rockland Pressestelle
Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM)

In the "Once upon a fraction of time and other stories" exhibition the Brandenburg Art Association (Brandenburgischer Kunstverein e. V.), Potsdam, presents artefacts from explosions by the Briton, Aoife Van Linden Tol. The objects can be seen from 14 February to 22 March 2009.

The exhibition is part of the "Art + Science: Model and Imagination" project of Gerrit Gohlke and this time will be managed by Karl Heinz Jeron. With a series of individual exhibitions, the Brandenburg Art Association regularly invites scientists and artists to join in a dialogue. The BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing sees in this artistic commitment as way of connecting science with art and providing the scientific contribution to the exhibition.

It is explosions that connect art and science in this exhibition. BAM's scientists have investigated explosions within a 50-liter spherical autoclave. This autoclave, unique in Europe, is used for studying reactions of gases under high pressure. The four-ton-heavy autoclave is designed for a maximum pressure of up to 1100 bar.

In a test series the explosion behaviour of liquid toluene and pure oxygen was determined. Copper sample plates with a diameter of 40 cm were filled with about 380 ml toluene. Subsequently, the autoclave was filled with pure oxygen. Within the test series the oxygen pressure was varied between 8.5 bar and 21 bar oxygen pressure, and detonations were performed which can be characterised by extremely fast reactions connected with a huge pressure increase.

The detonations substantially deformed the plates and oyster-shaped forms of fascinating beauty were produced. Several plates of this kind and an unused plate have been exhibited.

Aoife Van Linden Tol plans to produce more artistic explosions on the BAM Test Site Technical Safety in June 2009. BAM has already supported her in an art project in 2007 by providing the explosion test stand and ensuring safe conditions.

The artist Aoife Van Linden Tol comes from London. She studied arts at the Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design and it was after her studies that she started to artistically deform objects by explosions.

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
