AACSB accreditation: HHL is first private university in Germany to receive AACSB reaccreditation

MBA Volker Stößel Marketing und Public Relations
Handelshochschule Leipzig

HHL - Leipzig Graduate School of Management is Germany's first private university to receive maintenance of accreditation by the prestigious American organization AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). The AACSB International accreditation procedure evaluates a business school's entire operations as well as all its academic programs. Internationally fewer than five per cent of business schools have been granted AACSB accreditation, the hallmark of excellence in business education. HHL is one of only three German institutions with this seal of quality to date.

The maintenance of HHL's AACSB accreditation is proof of the sustained quality of its management education programs in the context of constantly increasing competition for the best business students from around the world. At the same time, it confirms HHL's prominent position among the leading business schools. Prof. Dr. Hans Wiesmeth, Dean of HHL: "During their visit in January the international peer review team noted that one of HHL's particular strengths lies in its top-class students and programs. In addition, the AACSB team was impressed by HHL's excellent networking with regional, national and international companies, as well as the strong commitment demonstrated by faculty, staff, students and alumni." Dr. Judith Marquardt, Chancellor of HHL adds: "The important milestone of reaccreditation by AACSB puts HHL in a position to successfully continue implementing its future-oriented growth strategy. This includes doubling the student numbers while at the same time maintaining the outstanding quality of the school's services and study environment, together with the expansion of the faculty, competence centers and executive education."

The time-consuming and challenging preparations for the maintenance of accreditation process, ranging from a self-evaluation study to the on-campus visit by the peer review team, were ably coordinated by Jana Studemund, Total Quality Management Officer at HHL, and her team. Ms. Studemund confirms: "We regard accreditation and maintenance of accreditation by AACSB International as a valuable stimulus to the continued optimization of our programs and processes. This international assessment requires us to set ourselves - and meet - quality standards which are by no means common in Germany's tertiary education sector."

Through its reaccreditation by AACSB International HHL documents that it is committed to offering a practice-oriented generalist management education of the highest academic quality, flanked by first-class services and study conditions. Prof. Dr. Hans Wiesmeth emphasizes that HHL does not just teach the "hard skills" essential to academic management studies, but also attaches great importance to developing "soft skills" such as teamwork, intercultural competencies and communication skills. The focus lies clearly on the personal nurturing of highly talented individuals who have the potential to become effective and responsible business leaders.

HHL - Leipzig Graduate School of Management
HHL - Leipzig Graduate School of Management was founded in 1898 as Germany's first business school. It was re-established in 1992 as a private, state-approved institution with university status, i.e. it may grant doctoral and habilitation degrees. Today it is considered one of the leading business schools. In addition to its international focus, the synthesis of theory and practice at HHL is central. Furthermore, HHL has set itself the goal to educate effective and responsible business leaders through its "Integrated Management" approach. HHL offers an 18-month Master's program in Management leading to the degree Master of Science (MSc). In addition, HHL has an 18-month full-time (24-month part-time) MBA program for professionals. A three-year doctoral program, which can also be completed by professionals with the appropriate qualifications, tops off HHL's portfolio of degree programs. HHL's subsidiary HHL Executive GmbH offers company-specific and open enrollment executive education. In April 2004 HHL received the highly-respected accreditation by AACSB International. The maintenance of accreditation for a further five years was granted in April 2009.
