The Professor Dr. Jürgen Geiger Foundation awarded the 17th Annual Dissertation Prize to Dr. Helmut Schultheiß, born in 1981 in Bad Dürkheim and currently employed at the Argonne National Laboratories (U.S.A.). His dissertation on "Coherence and damping behavior of spin waves in magnetic microstructures" was completed at the University of Kaiserslautern (Germany) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Burkard Hillebrands (Department of Physics and State Research Center OPTIMAS).
Dr. Schultheiß was honored for his pioneering and fundamental work about theoretical models and further development of Brillouin light scattering microscopy. His work substantially contributes to our understanding of magnetic microstructures in solids. The phenomena and processes he examined are at the center of current international research activities. It is entirely possible that they represent an impulse for the development of new storage media. This work is thus in perfect tradition of the Foundation’s namesake who published the habilitation thesis in 1967 titled "Electrons and Solids".
The award that is endowed with prize money of 1,000 Euros was presented by the private foundation to Helmut Schultheiß during a ceremony in the Stiftskeller of the Stadtsparkasse Kaiserslautern. The prize winner was honored by Dr. Jan Geiger and Karin Decker, appointed member of the board of Stadtsparkasse Kaiserslautern.
Stadtsparkasse Kaiserslautern and the German Physical Society (Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft, DPG) have supported the work of the foundation from the beginning.
