ESMT European School of Management and Technology has successfully completed the restoration of the historically significant window by the artist Walter Womacka. The 20-meter tall stained-glass window encompasses the entire back wall along the main staircase of the ESMT campus, formerly the State Council Building of East Germany.
"There are few places where the paradoxes of history are more evident than in the entrance hall of ESMT. The glass images by Walter Womacka serve as a most impressive witness to the history of the former GDR,” said Horst Bredekamp, director of the Institut für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte (IKB) at Humboldt University in Berlin and one of Germany’s leading art historians.
Wulff Plinke, founding dean of ESMT and chairman of the Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer der ESMT, commented, “We would like to thank the special dedication of those who supported the window’s restoration, thereby securing this important cultural and historical heritage for coming generations.”
The restoration of the window was made possible by private donations and grants, including support by the VNG-Verbundnetz Gas AG Foundation. The fundraising initiative was spearheaded by the Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer der ESMT.
Under the direction of Christiane Mergner, the Berlin-based company Berlin-Glas conducted the restoration. Over the course of several weeks, the specialists repaired cracks that had developed over several decades, renewed contours, and cleaned and secured the entire stained-glass window. With the installation of a new lighting system, the restoration is now complete.
