Das Magazin Physics World wählt jedes Jahr eine Liste der weltweit zehn bedeutendsten wissenschaftlichen Durchbrüche in der Physik aus. Ganz oben auf der Liste ist die Entdeckung des Higgs Boson am CERN, aber auch die TU Kaiserslautern ist dieses Jahr an einer TOP 10 Entdeckung beteiligt.
Antoine Bérut, Artak Arakelyan, Artyom Petrosyan und Sergio Ciliberto der Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, Eric Lutz von der Universität Augsburg und Raoul Dillenschneider von der TU Kaiserslautern wurden ausgezeichnet für die erste Messung und Analyse der minimalen Wärmeentwicklung, die durch das Löschen eines Datenbits erzeugt wird [Nature 483, 187-189 (2012)]. Dies ist ein fundamentaler Effekt in der Informationsverarbeitung, der schon 1961 von Rolf Landauer vorhergesagt wurde (Landauer Prinzip) und nun zum ersten Mal systematisch nachgewiesen werden konnte.
