Modelprojects European Urban Studies Forum 2002
28th-29th of November 2002
The postgraduate 'European Urban Studies' study programme responds to profound changes in ur-ban planning in the age of globalisation, increased social flexibility and new media. The programme sees the challenges facing the emerging information and service society as a positive opportunity for a renaissance of the European city.
The integration of practical experience is a central aspect of the 'European Urban Studies' concept. The Modelprojects European Urban Studies Forum reflects a broad spectrum of best-practice urban projects from Germany, Europe and overseas in which the students have participated in their semester in practice.
The Modelprojects European Urban Studies Forum is an annual event which brings together students, project partners, notable speakers and all those interested in current urban issues. It provides an in-ternationally-renowned platform for the discourse
of current issues in urban planning and development.
This year 20 students present their findings of research projects from seven nations for further discus-sion. A podium discussion with the Modelproject partners follows chaired by guest presenters.

Vortrag êLecture
"Everyday Urbanism"
"Since the late nineteenth century, architects have attempted to transform the delights of the city di-rectly into the principles of urban design. Even as they are inspired by the mysteries, horrors, and multiplicities of the modern city to create new forms, the dominant design ideologies of the last hun-dred years continue to be construed as essentialistic architectural truths. Over and over again, expe-rience demonstrates that this type of truth-seeking precludes the vitality of urban expe-rience that in-spired architecture in the first place. The tension between modern architecture's quest for the con-ceptually pure and the plurality of the modern city defines the fundamental dilemma of twentieth-century urban desígn."
John Kaliski is an architect practicing in Los Angeles. He teaches urban studies and design studio at the Southern California Institute of Architecture. He is an author of noumerons articles on urban de-sign.
