First graduates in the Master’s Course “Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design“

On 19th September 2013 the ceremonial farewell of the first graduates of the German-Arabic Master’s Course “Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design” (IUSD) took place at the University of Stuttgart. The 20 graduates from Germany, Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Tunisia had been studying over the past two years at the Universities of Stuttgart and Cairo and in the course of their studies had dealt with the current challenges of sustainable planning and building in the Middle East and in North Africa in depth.

Prof. Antje Stokman, Study Programme Director of IUSD at the University of Stuttgart: “With the partnership between the University of Stuttgart and Ain Shams Universität in Cairo the educational capacities that already exist in Germany and Egypt can be ideally used for the regional development and to solve global problems. With the graduates having completed the course, an initial milestone has been achieved in this new type of cooperation, which is new territory for both univeristies.”
The course of studies, funded by DAAD, set itself the target of training a new generation of planners and future decision-makers who are prepared for the challenges resulting from the rapid social transformation in the MENA-Region (“Middle East & North Africa“) and the global challenges such as scarcity of resources and climate change. The means for establishing the course of studies as well as for the grants for the students were made available jointly by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and the Egyptian Ministry for University, Science and Research (MoHESR).
