Der Präsident der Freien Universität Berlin, Professor Dr. Peter Gaehtgens, ist am Montag (17. Februar) zum neuen Präsidenten der Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) gewählt worden. Der 65jährige Mediziner setzte sich im ersten Wahlgang gegen seinen Mitbewerber um das Amt, den Rektor der Universität Paderborn, Professor Dr. Wolfgang Weber, durch.
Die dreijährige Amtszeit des neuen Präsidenten beginnt am 1. August 2003. Gaehtgens löst dann Professor Dr. Klaus Landfried ab, der seit 1997 im Amt ist. Nach zwei Amtsperioden stand er nicht zur Wiederwahl.
Der gebürtige Dresdner Gaehtgens studierte in Freiburg, München und Köln. Er ist seit 1983 Professor an der Freien Universität und seit 1999 deren Präsident.
