German language skills are a prerequisite for taking up studies at a university in Rhineland-Palatinate / Mainz University supports the 5-point program of the State Ministry of Education, Science, Continuing Education, and Culture

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is determined to offer qualified students a quick and easy entry into university. "Many refugees have had good academic training in their home countries. We see it as our responsibility to help them maintain their educational opportunities," said the President of Mainz University, Professor Georg Krausch. "Thus we will start a German beginners' course for refugees who want to study at a university in Rhineland-Palatinate – for the advancement of their personality, for maintaining their occupational outlook, and, last but not least, for their future integration in the German job market."

Starting in February 2016, the International Preparatory and Language Center (Internationales Studien- und Sprachenkolleg – ISSK) at Mainz University offers an intensive German beginners' course for refugees who want to study in Rhineland-Palatinate, but who do not yet have any or have only minor German language skills. This German course prepares for the qualifying examination for the International Preparatory College (Internationales Studien- und Sprachenkolleg) or further preparatory German courses which prepare for the DSH-2 exam, the necessary German language test to be passed for enrolling in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program at a university.

The application process for one of the available places at ISSK will start in November. All refugees living in Germany whose legal residential status has been clarified and who are able to present documents proving their entitlement to either enter a German university via the Studienkolleg / Feststellungsprüfung or start a B.A. or M.A. degree program directly can apply online at http://www.studium-fluechtlinge-rlp.de until December 11, 2015. Further information is available at the ISSK website at http://www.issk.uni-mainz.de/400.php.

As an international center for learning, teaching, and research, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has a special commitment to crossing the boundaries between nations and cultures. About 4,000 students or eleven percent of the overall JGU student body come from abroad.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Continuing Education, and Culture in Rhineland-Palatinate covers all costs of the German beginners' course for refugees at Mainz University.
