A research team has created a plan outlining future refurbishment, energy provision and urban development measures for the campus belonging to the Technische Universität Braunschweig. This could enable the primary energy consumption to be reduced by 40% by 2020. The BINE-Projektinfo brochure "University campus to become climate neutral" (10/2015) describes the detailed appraisal of the existing building stock and the planned measures.
Scenarios for the development until 2020
The researchers first of all identified 19 suitable buildings and, among other things, analysed their energy consumption and energy costs. They have also been able to transfer the results of the appraisal to other campus buildings of the same type.
The researchers then developed refurbishment measures and determined their costs and savings possibilities. They also identified potential energy savings for the building services technology, the interior lighting of the circulation areas, offices and laboratories, as well as for the technical equipment used in the buildings. The research team believes that the planned measures can reduce the primary energy consumption on the campus by at least 40%. For example, optimising the air conditioning systems could theoretically save 14%.
The research project was conducted under the leadership of the Institute for Building Services and Energy Design together with other institutes at the Technische Universität Braunschweig.
