Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM): Taking abroad into account as further development chance

Franziska Pollei Hochschulmarketing
Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM)

During their international well flanked trip to Asia lasting from 17.11.2015 until 27.11.2015 the rectorship of FHM visited several new networking partners. Prof. Dr. Richard Merk, CEO of the FHM, as well as their Rector Prof. Dr. Anne Dreier signed internationally important contracts with renowned higher education institutions. These contracts serve as a sustainable basis for innovative development-projects in research and science across international and intercultural borders. Their journey proceeded from Hangzhou (China) until New Delhi (India).
Starting point for continuing further development of FHM is the economic globalization of German small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This development has been proven as an internationally accepted and promising subject of innovation. Here, several global partner institutions participate multifariously in conjunction with the FHM. This thought is even more manifested in the newly-established “German-Asian Institute of SMEs”, which pools the stakeholders in Asia and Germany and coordinates the activities of FHM in the Asian region.
This strategy is an essential key success factor within the sustainable strategy of FHM. Development and improvement of international programs covering research and science is one of the most important components for the University of Applied Science.
Keeping this main objective in mind, the first stage of their journey led to Hangzhou, where a trilateral agreement between “Zhejiang University of Hangzhou", "Entel College Hangzhou" and FHM was signed. Common sense is the further development of FHM Studienkolleg on a continuously high level of quality. Against this background, already 400 students from all over the world became a part of the FHM in one of the 4 Studienkolleg-Campuses (Bielefeld, Schwerin, Köln/Pulheim and Hannover). This also includes high-school graduates from Hangzhou itself.

The network of FHM is furthermore enriched through bilateral agreements with "Sichuan Agriculture University" in Chengdu and Yaan as well as with the "Culture and Language University" in Beijing. In contrast to previous negotiations, a different topic was dealt with these 2 well-known universities: FHM intends to develop German-speaking study courses in China in association with their partners. Thereby, independent FHM-structures are taken into account. For this reason, the bilateral agreements shall become reality soon: FHM China is planned to be founded in 2016. For this, a solid operational and strategical framework for further development was established.
To crown all these efforts, the leaders of FHM commonly adjusted mutually beneficial possibilities with the "Qingdao University of Science and Technology". Intention is the establishment of a common campus together with 4 different German higher-education institutions. In this campus, study courses shall be tested and implemented relying on the quality standards of FHM. Like this, the study models will be accessible for the Chinese education sector.
Completing the comprehensive strategy of internationalization for FHM, the group travelled to New Delhi, starting with the world-famous "All India Institute of Medical Sciences of Delhi". To prepare institutional and programmatic cooperation, the new FHM-master courses were presented. "Clinic Management" (MMA) and "Medical Practice Administration" (MMPA) cover the medical segmentation within the University of Applied Science.
During a meeting with the “German-Indian Chamber of Foreign Trade, the leaders of FHM also discussed several opportunities to support German SMEs in India offering new study courses. Following this main idea, FHM participated in many informational events to give the public an insight into their programs and study offers. Like this, they could share all of their experiences and successful strategies with interested people. These kind of events are ideal to transfer competence, perspectives and trust. This is all the more the reason for keeping employees of FHM right on-sight of the institutions: to establish long-term relationships and inspire confidence.
Prof. Dr. Torsten Fischer, Pro-Rector of International Affairs, accompanied the top managers during their journey. Additionally to the common visited locations, he continued the trip to further inform other partners of possible cooperation models and possibilities to increase collaboration. For this reason, Prof. Dr. Fischer went on informing interested audience about potential careers as well as presenting the perspectives to the German consulates. On behalf of the rectorship, he also completed the contract with “SRM University of Chennai” which records a double degree in Hotel- and Tourism-Management starting in 2015.
On the scale of things, FHM was able to further improve and develop their network and partnership of Asian higher education institutions. The newly founded “German-Asian Insitute of SMEs” will ensure the implementation of the internationalization strategy sustainably. Due to the common consistent and well-established work processes, presently 23 cooperation partners guarantee the high standard and quality in the fields of the international Studienkolleg and FHM bachelor or master programs. They are now further improved through “consecutive study programs” (“German Chinese Business Studies”) and double degree programs (“International Hotel- and Tourism-Management”).
