Das Air Force Research Laboratory/European Office of Aerospace research and Development (AFRL) in London fördert erstmalig in Deutschland ein Steganographie-Projekt mit 100 000 $.
Steganographie, die alte Kunst und noch junge Wissenschaft der verdeckten Kommunikation, wird im Institut für Systemarchitektur der Dresdner Informatik schon seit 1996 erforscht.
Steganographische Algorithmen werden zur vertraulichen Kommunikation angewendet, um neben der Botschaft selbst auch den Umstand, dass versteckt kommuniziert wird, geheim zu halten. Brisante Daten werden dazu meist in harmlose Bild- oder Audiodateien eingebettet. Da sich heute viele ursprünglich sicher geglaubte Steganographieprogramme nachweisen lassen, versucht der Dresdner Informatiker Dr. Andreas Westfeld eine neue Generation steganographischer Algorithmen mit einer stabileren Konstruktionen zu schaffen.
Die international anerkannte Steganografie-Forschung an der TU Dresden ist das erste und bisher einzige vom AFRL in Deutschland geförderte Projekt. Der Förderungszeitraum läuft vom 1. Juni 2003 bis zum 4. April 2004.
