The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in cooperation with the young analysts of the "Analytical Chemistry" Division of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), is to organise a summer school on "Quality Assurance in Analytical Chemistry". The event takes place in Berlin from the 4th to the 8th of July 2016. Registration is now open.
How can quality assurance aspects be successfully integrated into the strategic planning of methods development in analytical chemistry?
This will be the key topic of the summer school to be offered by the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung and the young analysts of the "Analytical Chemistry" Division of the German Chemical Society from 4 to 8 July 2016 in Berlin.
"Ph.D. students who are developing analytical methods within their research, often generate a wealth of data and results that must be assessed and evaluated in a specialist way" says Prof. Irene Nehls, Head of the BAM Division 1.2 "Organic Trace Analysis" and initiator of the summer school. "In this case, in addition to purely scientific aspects, these results must also satisfy the requirements of quality assurance."
A validation process – i.e. documented evidence that a method is suitable for the intended application and meets the specified requirements, always accompanies targeted methods developments.
This involves the systematic recording of performance characteristics such as accuracy and precision, linearity and calibration function, recovery rate, range limits, selectivity and measurement uncertainty.
TARGET GROUP: PH.D. STUDENTS FROM ANALYTICAL WORKING GROUPS
The planned summer school will be primarily aimed at Ph.D. students who are still at the beginning of their work to ensure that these quality assurance aspects receive proper attention in the early strategic planning phase of methods development.
In the week-long event intended exclusively for Ph.D. students from analytical working groups, the participants will be trained in the most important basic concepts of internal and external quality assurance systems in analytical chemistry.
VENUE: BAM ADLERSHOF BRANCH
The summer school will be held in the conference hall of the new BAM building in Berlin-Adlershof and scientists from BAM’s Department 1 "Analytical Chemistry; Reference Materials" will offer lectures, seminars and selected trainings.
A certificate will be issued on the final day after a successful final written test.
EXCURSIONS ARE PLANNED TO COMPANIES AND "BEAMLINE" BESSY II
In addition to high-level knowledge transfer, the programme will also include two excursions.
In cooperation with the Joint Initiative of Non-University Research Institutions in Adlershof (IGAFA) there will be a tour of the Adlershof campus with its new and historic buildings and a visit to BESSY II. The participants will visit Beamline (BAMline) that includes experimental and measurement setups for non-destructive testing of materials and components, and analytical methods for reviewing questions at various scales.
In the second excursion, a visit is planned to Berlin-Chemie, a Berlin-based pharmaceutical company in BAM’s immediate neighbourhood.

The course offers 50 places. Participation will cost €50 for GDCh Division "Analytical Chemistry" members and €100 for non-members. Participants must cover their own travel and subsistence costs. The course language will be German.
